World War III
July 18, 2136
Dear Diary,
All was going well, in the beginning. The geneticists came across a revolutionary discovery. They were able to easily cross breed different species of fruits, and vegetables. The short-term benefits were great, I mean who doesn’t like a papple, or a pear and apple cross breed. They were great tasting, and healthier than traditional apples or pears. But the genes that they modify to create cross breed organisms can easily be modified incorrectly, which results in terrible combinations. Animal cells have ended up in corn, and fish cells have ended up in wheat. There was an accident every so often, but to no effect on the population. The geneticists were becoming better and better at their craft, and they were willing to take chances and try more exotic combinations of different organisms. It was April of 2134, when they announced that they were going to attempt to mix corn, wheat, and rice all together. If they were to succeed, the world would have the potential to eliminate famine and deliver nutritional food to third world countries. It appeared that they had succeeded, for the first few months. Unbeknownst to anybody, the wheat gene the geneticists used to create the first generation crop had been tampered with. The cell used was cancerous, and appeared dormant until about a year later. Because every mixed crop was offspring of the first generation, they carried the cancerous gene also. People who ate the crop would get cancer in the digestive tract, from the esophagus to the intestines. It had become such a majorly used crop in the world, actually the most prominent in many dishes of different regions. The world’s dependence on one crop was bringing them down. After the UN and World Health Organization found out, they had to try and scavenge the remaining corn, wheat, and rice crops that weren’t contaminated, which was barely enough to feed a country like the U.S., let alone the world. The UN was in charge of rationing food according to population, to 195 angry countries. Riots were being held outside the UN building. The military was deployed in the streets of the U.S. despite this act being completely unconstitutional. They were used as riot control, and people were killed while exercising their rights. War was gradually becoming inevitable. The U.S. was feuding with Russia, Iran and Israel were on the brink of nuclear warfare, and Pakistan had just invaded India in an attempt to steal the small amount of food available in the second most populated country. All alliances were broken; it was every country for itself. All hell broke loose when Israel and Iran each launched nuclear strikes on one another about 10 days ago. The material in the bombs destroyed all clean water in the Middle East, and the strikes set off a chain reaction. All countries which possessed nuclear capabilities fired at their rivals. Within four days, the Earth was a barren wasteland. All buildings were destroyed, rivers glowed bright green with uranium, plutonium and other highly destructive elements. The Earth’s population went from 7 billion before the food crisis to a sad 100,000 alive today. I am one of the last ones left. Bunkers have been pulverized by multi megaton bombs, so there is nowhere safe to stay. The scientists predict we will all die from exposure to nuclear material within a few days. I write as I struggle to breath, with my life flashing before my eyes. You wouldn’t believe how much energy it takes just to move this pen. I’m fading in and out of consciousness, and my vision is blurring. Everything is turning to a bright white.

My last words,
Sarah
